When something's on stage you get to see all of it, choose what to look at, and people move around, and there's an audience. Something about seeing something live makes it easier to sit still and listen to talking. But when it's two dimensions and we only get to see what the director chooses to let us see. It's boring. There's only one thing to look at and it's flat and needs to move to make up for its limitations.Emily Blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02163221455899041141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-53521921081652947662010-03-25T12:08:26.945-07:002010-03-25T12:08:26.945-07:00When I finally got around to watching "Closer...When I finally got around to watching "Closer" I felt restless throughout the movie because it seemed like every seen was just two talking heads.

It wasn't until I read the IMDB page later that I found out it was a play.

Not sure if it's the story or the writer that is not translating well to the screen.

Or is it our expectations of a movie versus a play?

-JimJim Endecotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16484816992028286627noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-36323404313576850442010-03-24T22:16:07.897-07:002010-03-24T22:16:07.897-07:00I really don't mind exposition through dialogu...I really don't mind exposition through dialogue in a script - so long as it's good dialogue - and by good dialogue I mean damn good, like the ghost scene in Hamlet good.

Otherwise show, don't tell.sean1https://www.blogger.com/profile/12286461467980818381noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-79340998138607348662010-03-24T12:14:15.747-07:002010-03-24T12:14:15.747-07:00But the film picks up when Jake enters the pic ;) ...But the film picks up when Jake enters the pic ;) Maybe if you just fast forward the other stuff...?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-38044902050065630072010-03-24T10:33:33.873-07:002010-03-24T10:33:33.873-07:00I did not know it was a play. That just highlights the need to remember that something that works on stage does not necessarily work on screen.Emily Blakehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02163221455899041141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-49958654110440748562010-03-24T09:42:10.096-07:002010-03-24T09:42:10.096-07:00EB:

Meaning that even if you're adapting a play into a screenplay, you still have to do your job as a screenwriter. Like not letting the scene get boring.

Edward Albee used to gripe about Ernest Lehman's getting an Oscar nom for "retyping" his play, but it's not that simple.

Keep up the good work!
--IvanIvanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16443946766217092846noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-25895692.post-80694240158327331042010-03-24T09:36:58.361-07:002010-03-24T09:36:58.361-07:00Proof is a stage play, I dont know if you knew tha...Proof is a stage play, I dont know if you knew that. I loved the play but I didn't care for the film. I hate Gwyneth Paltrow, she ruined it for me, but also, I hated the screenplay.

Sometimes stage plays just don't work onscreen.Sabina E.https://www.blogger.com/profile/14679639206346030919noreply@blogger.com
