After years of not really doing anything with the short film I produced/co-wrote/directed in 2007, I finally posted it to YouTube. Everyone in the credits knows more than I do, so I thank them so much for contributing their expertise, and I apologize for being such a lousy producer.
I'd change a few things if I were to shoot this now, but I'm proud of the work we did, and I learned so much about the whole process from start to finish. Nothing teaches you more about filmmaking than making a film.
So here it is, after years of hiding on my shelf, Game Night.
I like it! Your one actor looks like a pissed off Ryan Renolds. I am interesting in knowing the camera used to shoot your film with, and did you handheld your fight scene angles yourself?
Thanks Specman! It was so long ago, I don't remember the camera. My DP did all the actual camera handling. I pointed at specific shots I wanted, but he pretty much ran with all his great ideas. The big challenge in the fight scene was keeping all the equipment and lights out of frame. It was a tiny apartment.
Thanks, Malibo! The gaffer was amazing and obsessive, as a gaffer should be. That's probably the most important person for the look of the shoot. We actually didn't have to do too many takes; in fact, we finished four hours early. I honestly think I was very lucky to have excellent people around me, people who were for the most part respectful even though they all knew I had no idea what I was doing.
There was only really one prima donna actor moment.
Hi, Andy Kuepper the DP here. For those asking: I believe we shot this on an HVX-200 with no mods. The Gaffer was Josh Oliver, a good friend of mine, and I was assisted by Kellee Hiatt. Was a blast working on this project, glad to see it finally completed!
I finally got it to play to 8:30 and then I reloaded and got to the end with Internet Exploder. Chrome and Firefox gave me weird problems. Not sure what is going on I've never seen anything like it. Also, trying to use a downloader it stops the download. Looks Great! Everyone involved did an amazing job!
Nicely done. The look of the film seems like it was made for a lot more money.
ReplyDeleteThanks! A lot of people donated their time, and I was lucky to get a fantastic gaffer and DP, way better than I deserved.

ReplyDeleteCoof. (cool fun)
ReplyDeleteLiked the look of the short--colors, visuals, directing, acting. Lucky to find good actors. Looks very professional.
What's the secret sauce? (Did you have to shoot many takes?)
Good stuff. Thanks for getting me into a new band, too: Los Amigos Invisibles.

Sean1, Thanks! That was originally a temp score chosen by my very talented editor, but it fit so well, we both decided to leave the music in.
ReplyDeleteRasa9, the band that plays the song over the credits, was fronted by my friend Stefan, who played Billy.
How did you find your team? Were you guys already friends?

ReplyDeleteAndy! Yay! I lost your info! Email me. I will send you a disk.
ReplyDeleteHaving a problem viewing the video. It stops at various points on Chrome and firefox. Is the video corrupted?
ReplyDeleteIt would appear you are right. Works fine for me when I'm logged in, but not if I'm not.
ReplyDeleteI'll upload it again.
