My DVD collection

Movies I liked enough to have on DVD, in the order in which they appear on my shelf. You can see I began with kind of an organization by genre thing and then abandoned it after the action movies:

Lord of the Rings trilogy
The Matrix
The Matrix Reloaded (only because the MTV movie awards skit with Justin Timberlake and Sean William Scott is hilarious, not because I like the movie)
Spiderman 1 and 2
Batman Begins
X Men 2
Serenity
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hero
House of Flying Daggers
Once Upon a Time in China
Brotherhood of the Wolf
Troy (Shut up. It's sort of the Iliad. And it has hot naked dudes.)
Pitch Black
Dark Fury (The animated sequel to Pitch Black. Because I fucking love Pitch Black. In fact I'm pretty sure I stole my copy from my ex.)
Gladiator
The Musketeer
In Bruges
A Knight's Tale
Fight Club
Rocky
Rocky Balboa (An impulse buy I had never seen)
3:10 to Yuma (remake)
Shaun of the Dead
Hot Fuzz
Snatch
Go
The Princess Bride
Garden State
The Last Kiss (American)
The Legend of Bagger Vance (Fuck off. I like that movie.)
Shattered Glass
Brokeback Mountain
The Darjeeling Limited
The Mating Habits of the Earthbound Human (If you have not seen this film, put it in your queue this goddamn minute or you are a communist.)
Bottle Rocket
Little Miss Sunshine
The Simpsons Movie
Sweeny Todd
Moulin Rouge
Chicago
Memento
Big Fish
Paris, Je T'Aime
The Outsiders (mostly for work)
Romeo + Juliet
Hamlet (Kenneth Branagh)
Osama
The Joy Luck Club (also for work)
The Maltese Falcon
Chinatown
Brick
Cyrano de Bergerac (Gerard Depardieu version)
Shakespeare in Love
Life is Beautiful
Suicide Kings
I Am Legend (only because I wanted the alternate ending, which was not on this goddamn disk)
Sideways
Office Space
Galaxy Quest
The Emperor's New Groove
Amelie
The Star Wars Trilogy (Ep IV was stolen, so I replaced it with that disk that included the original version)

  1. you have a good DVD collection. I do have Amelie (i must have seen that like, 35 times already), Crouching Tiger, Iron Monkey. I don't remember what else right now. I think I own at least 50 DVDs, but most of them are mostly B/W old films, Indian films (NON-Bollywood crap, thank you very much), or foreign/art films.

My guilty pleasure DVDs are Rat Race, Terminator and T2, yeah baby.

  2. Big fan of Pitch Black. Did not know about Dark Fury.

    Thank you for that.

  3. Since you like "Hot Fuzz" (which I love, because it's high camp with out the campiness--if you know what I mean), you'd probably like "Big Nothing" and "Panic" even though there're nothing alike...

    Anyway...

I have a question for you (because, frankly I value your opinion and attitude) but I don't want to ask it (it's industry related) in a public forum, would it be okay if I emailed you?

  4. From the look of things, I'm guessing that you have SIDEWAYS because of all the amazing explosions.

I kid, I kid. I love that movie.

  5. Deaf, what non-Bollywood Indian movies are good? I've been trying to watch more non-European foreign films.

Jim, Dark Fury is Japanimated but it's way better than Chronicles. It takes place between the movies.

    JJ, of course!

Mr. Peel, Sideways does have a sort of fist fight in it at least.

  7. nice! My stand-outs, the ones I'd have to replace if they got lost:

    Almost Famous
    Risky Business
    The Year Of Living Dangerously
    Bugsy
    The Right Stuff
    JFK
    Young Frankenstein
    Blazing Saddles

oddball orphans only I could love:
    The Taste Of Cherry (Iran)
Trigger Happy...with Richard Dreyfuss and Jeff Goldblum...and Billy Idol...and Gregory Hines...and Burt Reynolds.

    Terminal Virus...of course.

    Jay and Silent Bob.

  8. non-Bollywood films to check out:

Mr and Mrs Iyer (written and directed by a woman!), about the Hindu-Muslim tension, very good film.

Pather Panchali, a classic old 1959 film directed by Satyajit Ray, who has been cited as a major influence for European New Wave. its on Netflix. it's such a sad movie, though.

Dor, a feminist indie film. There are like 3 songs in the film, but its very NON-Bollywood, trust me.

Bombay (1995), a Tamil film. this also has songs, but it's not typical Bollycrap, either. It's set against the 1993 Bombay riots, about a Muslim woman who married a Hindu man.

Lagaan, a Hindi Bollywood film, which again, is non-typical Bollycrap film, very good film.

Chak De!, another Bollywood film but there are no stupid MTV-esque songs in this. It's a pro-feminist sports movie, I LOVE this movie and I want to buy it on DVD.

let me know if you want any more recommendations! all these films are available on Netflix
