My computer is fucked

I am taking my laptop to a guy today to see if he can fix the damage and maybe save My Documents folder. It's so far gone it wouldn't even reload Windows, so it's time to fork over some cash to a professional.

It would be super awesome if someone could make a computer with the superior operating system of a PC and the superior virus protection of a Mac. Hear me, computer people? Can you get on that? I know, I know, some of you guys will be all "Get a Mac" but I cannot stand them. End of debate for me. Instead I'd love it if someone just made my PC more virus resistant. Is that one of those things they put in Windows 7?

Hopefully I will be able to resume posting and writing tomorrow.

"Superior operating system of a PC". Did somebody fast forward the year to April 1, 2010 and not tell me?

  3. A friend of mine, a devout PC user, accurately pointed out to me (I'm a Mac guy these days) that the reason MAC's don't have virus issues like PCs is because the number of users don't compare. Once Macs catch up to PCs so will the number of viruses. It's all relative.

But it doesn't male you want to kill the virus sender any less. And rightly so.

PS: Hope your first Christmas in your new home was all that and more.

  4. Yeah, I hate hackers and virus writers. They should be electrocuted by their keyboards.

Unfortunatley, without knowing which virus\worm whatever you got I can't help. If you can't get into Windows, it limits your possibilities.

Most antivirus, etc runs under Windows and not the repair console.

You should definitely think about getting Win7 or if you have Vista, scheduling a backup every few days.

  5. Unfortunately there is no "superior virus protection" on a Mac. It's just that so many fewer people use Macs that no one really bothered writing a virus for it. Yet, I guess.

  6. You can probably find someone who specializes in hard drive recoveries at a decent rate, so that even if Windows can't be reloaded, the data should be recoverable.

Don't let the tech people tell you it's completely hopeless (which, granted, they may not). It's almost never hopeless -- depending on how important the files are and how much you're willing to spend. The good specialists could be in the $100-200 range, but if it's royally fucked, then you'd need to go to an uber-expert who normally handle big corporate clients -- it'd be pricey, but likely recoverable.
