Some time ago, someone in a position of some influence suggested putting my name in the mix for the Fraggle Rock movie. Of course I realize now how ridiculous the odds would have been for me to have landed that job, but at the time I thought it sounded reasonable.
I loved Fraggle Rock. I don't think you can possibly understand how much I loved Fraggle Rock. I would stay up on the couch at my grandmother's house as a kid, completely glued to that television, refusing to go to bed because I wanted to watch more episodes of Fraggle Rock.
So when I heard I could somehow possible be THE writer to tackle Fraggle Rock the screenplay, of course I said NO. I didn't even hesitate.
Have you read what I write? Cuss words and violence, that's me. Strong women who like to beat ass because it's the only way they know how to express their feelings. I do not write about sharing and trash heaps. My Fraggle Rock movie would revolve around a bloody raid on the Gorgs to get revenge for the death of Wembly. And everybody'd be all pissed, and they'd carry little Fraggle guns, and Red would be a badass Muy Thai warrior who would push Gobo to the side when his leadership proved ineffective.
I'm pretty sure that's not what they're looking for. Sometimes I think back to that moment and wonder if I should have said yes, just throw my hat in there, what's the worst that could happen? I don't know, but I know they wouldn't have picked me.

next time Hollywood decides to greenlight an action film starring a woman (or co-starring a woman), they SOOOO need to hire you.
ReplyDeleteif someone asks me to write a historical script, I would probably decline because that's just not my thing, and I dont think I can write proper dialogue for a historical movie. Too boring for me.
Hey Emily,
ReplyDeleteSince we are on the topic of action and violence.
What is your pro opinion of this action clip from KICK ASS -the movie was directed by a super-duper action director - Matthew Vaughn. Are a fan of his work? Right now he is the hottest film director in Hollywood, rumor has it that he might be directing KICK ASS 2: Balls To The Wall!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here is the clip:

BTW -MAYHEM, GANGSTER AND PRE AND POST APOCALYPTIC COMICS, GRAPHIC NOVELS FOREVER! BOOK OF ELI, STARTED IT ALL!!!!!
M
Sabina that's what I've been trying to tell them, that they should hire me. But they don't listen.
ReplyDeleteM, I like Kick Ass. I am not a pro, however. I had one nonpaid assignment that went nowhere, although I did once get paid to rewrite a short script so that may count for something.
Book of Eli was great, but I think it owes a lot to films like The Road Warrior and its ilk.
As long as we're discussing Book of Eli...I personally hated the movie. It more than OWES something to films like The Road Warrior. It blatantly stole the identity of these far superior films. And the "twist", along with the ending, just had me rolling my eyes.
ReplyDeleteRBR - watch it again and try to appreciate the comic book style.
ReplyDeleteWhy was it a boxoffice hit?

ReplyDeleteWhy was it a boxoffice hit?"
Having a "comic book style" isn't enough of an argument for a movie. I found it to be dull and unoriginal and the ending was silly.
I don't know why it was a box office hit. Maybe because of the lead actor. Maybe there was nothing else in theaters at the time. What I do know is that the amount of money a movie makes says nothing about the quality.
I enjoyed Book of Eli very much, mostly because of the development of theme. It had a very strong sense of theme. And I liked the twist. I read the script first and really loved it.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it stole anything. I think Gary Whitta did what all writers do, wrote a project he loved with awareness of what came before him.
But different people have different taste.
Taste is subjective, as we all know. I would never try to diminish another person's opinion towards a movie.
ReplyDeleteBut it did steal plenty from the Mad Max films and it hoped, successfully it seems, that modern audiences hadn't seen or had forgotten about the earlier films.
The theft alone wouldn't make it a bad film.
