Community has shown us all how it's done

If you are a person who enjoys comedy and you are a person who enjoys action movies you must see the most recent episode of Community. A paintball war breaks out on campus and it is one of the most brilliant half hours of television I have ever seen. It puts all other sitcoms to complete shame.

Jeff, our sarcastic hero, falls asleep in his car and when he wakes up the entire campus is at paintball war. It's a post-apocalyptic zombie movie and Die Hard and Terminator 2 and The Warriors all rolled together and made funny. It's a love letter to action films and it's absolutely perfect.

I think what makes this one episode so especially brilliant is that it pushes the story forward. This neat idea came up - put the whole school into a paintball war - but the writers did it while making sure the relationships among the characters kept moving. Story wasn't forgotten for the sake of a cool gimmick.

So if you haven't seen it, you have to go to Hulu RIGHT NOW. We should all aspire to be this awesome.

  1. I keep waiting for COMMUNITY to fall apart but damn, it continues to be one of the brightest spots on TV. I'm equally impressed with PARKS AND REC. I thought that show began shaky but has really hit its stride of late. Consistently amusing, occasionally gut busting.

  2. agreed.. Community is hilarious... NBC definitely has my soul thursday nights. Great opener and great closer.

And I agree with Jeff that Parks and Rec has improved for the better. Ron Swanson has turned into my favorite character.

  4. I don't think it's very hard to put current sitcoms to shame, but I'll check this out. Sounds like something I'd love. The main guy's name escapes me right now but he's a funny dude.

  5. Community is becoming one of my favorite shows. It's really, really weird. And funny. BEST combination ever.

Especially since The Office is slightly left of relevant these days.

  6. It is a very good episode, but it fails pretty hard on the realism front. Long story short, paintball doesn't work that way.

  7. I don't think they were going for realism. For one thing, they seem to think community college is a four-year-program. But who cares? It's funny.

  8. Completely agree. This is what I posted on Twitter after watching it:

"'Modern Warfare' is to COMMUNITY what 'Walkabaout' is to LOST -- the episode I tell every prospective viewer they have to see."

The only thing missing was "Ode to Joy".

  10. Thank you, I had never heard of the show, but that was effin' brilliant. (Of course, I had to download it via BitTorrent because Hulu doesn't work in Europe. I will now be watching the show and, if it keeps up, buy it on DVD one day. I tell you, quote-unquote piracy does make customers.)
