My favorite bad movie

Recently I was thinking a lot about the movie Johnny Mnemonic. I know, awesome movie, right?

There's this scene toward the end after Keanu has been through lots of unpleasant experiences where he has a complete melt-down involving his wish for a club sandwich and a hooker. It's a pretty excellent scene.

The movie is not very good, I know this. But I own a copy of it on VHS - sadly, not the version with Keanu's head poking through the box - and yes, I paid for it with my own money. Because it's AWESOME.

I also love The Pirate Movie, an eighties version of Pirates of Penzance including music by Kool and the Gang and a scene that parodies Star Wars. I also own this film on VHS. It's a terrible movie but it is an AWESOME movie that my sister and I went to see like three times in the theater and bought the soundtrack for as soon as it was available on LP.

In fact, when I went to visit my sister in Texas several years ago we divvied up the records pretty evenly until we came to that soundtrack. We fought over it for like half an hour. She was pregnant so I let her have it. I figured her child should appreciate such rad tunes as "Pumpin' and Blowin'."

I am not ashamed to admit that I love these films. I know how bad they are. I also know they bring me joy.

What bad film do you love?

That's a tough question. I don't THINK I like any bad films, but I like a lot of really flawed films.

I don't think these films are bad. But others have shouted at me for loving them, I like:

    GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH
    CRITTERS
HEAR NO EVIL, SEE NO EVIL
    BIRD ON A WIRE
    HALLOWEEN II / HALLOWEEN H20
    JAWS 2
    CHRISTMAS VACATION
    SPACE BALLS
    TEMPLE OF DOOM
    LAKE PLACID
    THE LEGEND OF BAGGER VANCE
    NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE
    NOISES OFF
    X-MEN: THE LAST STAND
    TERMINATOR 3
    THE REF
    SUPERGIRL
    STAR TREK NEMESIS
    ADVENTURES IN BABYSITTING
    SCREAM 2
    JURASSIC PARK III
    ACROSS THE UNIVERSE
    ZATHURA
    MAVERICK

I think all these films are bags of fun. Some I even think are brilliant. Others, very flawed and others again downright embarrassing, but I still have a soft spot for them all.

Again, I don't think I like any bad movies. It's other people who think I do. But fuck them. ;-p

  5. No wait. I want a do-over. Ishtar isn't so bad. The other week I watched Wicker Park. Now that's a movie completely lacking in logic and sense. I was screaming at the screen at every turn.

  6. Well, maybe it's not bad, but ROADHOUSE comes to mind.

I can't help but look, and watch many times, even though it is ridiculous and terrible.

And hell, I thought I was the only one who has seen THE PIRATE MOVIE.

But, Emily, have you seen SOLARBABIES?

    Now THERE'S a bad movie.

  7. "Razor Blade Smile" - extremely low budget British vampire film that is truly terrible but I still love it.

    "Waterworld" - don't ask.

"Nightmare on Elm St 3 & 4" - when the sequels got cool and very funny.

"Return of the Living Dead" - "This is not a costume! It's a way of life!"

"Doomsday" - this was awful yet I find myself eagerly anticipating the DVD release.

  8. Um, I also own The Pirate Movie on VHS. As a kid they played it daily on HBO. After the fourth time, I was hooked. I also don't think it is bad, but it is definitely an acquired taste.

As for other bad movies (or just movies no one else watches):

    Pump Up the Volume
    The Company of Wolves
Hackers (the original, did something happen to Jolie's nose since then?)
    Turk182
    Flesh and Blood
    Men in Tights
    Lake Placid
    Time Bandits
    Ice Pirates!
    The Sword and the Sorcerer
    Krull
    Conan The Barbarian

Ok, I'll admit it: Any Dance Movie. I'll even watch Step up 2. They are cheesy fun, but the dialog is awful... so awful.

  9. Pump Up The Volume is not a bad movie. It's a CLASSIC!

    Finding Forrester
    Gone In 60 Seconds
    Matchstick Men

These are bad movies I actually like. There are other bad movies I like to watch with a few friends, just to wisecrack and laugh at how horrible they are.

  11. Ishtar, Return of the Living Dead and Time Bandits are all good movies. Come to think of it, Noises Off and Conan are pretty good, too. Gremlins 2 is a great movie.

The only Steven Seagal movie I own is Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. I'll watch it at the drop of a hat. It's not good but it puts a huge, stupid grin on my face. So there you go.

    YES.

  13. What is going on here? Matchstick Men is not a bad movie.

  14. Pluto Nash! Yes!

Also, on the same Keanu wavelength (he's done some good work, but also such awful work), I simply love Point Break, and when I heard there was talk of a sequel, I was overjoyed. I don't know why I love it -- I normally want to hang myself after most really bad flicks -- but for some reason I just dig it immensely.

Oh, and kevin... I don't care what anyone says, Star Trek: Nemesis is not a bad movie! It's no Wrath of Khan or First Contact, for sure, but it's not as bad as many fanboys will have you believe.

  15. My favourite bad movie is Frank Henenlotter's 'Brain Damage'. I found a DVD at blockbuster for $2...Hah.

'Frankenhooker' is pretty awful too...But in a good way! =)
