A gem in the $5 bin

This afternoon the Beefcake and I went to Best Buy and peeked into the $5 bin. Conspiracy Theory, Harry and the Hendersons, Bad Boys (the one with Sean Penn), Cast Away, Memento (Memento? In the $5 bin? What is the world coming to?), 15 World War II Movies, and one shiny copy of Ghostbusters.

I already have Memento, so we liberated the copy of Ghostbusters. And I thought momentarily, this movie comes on Comedy Central like once a week, so do we really need to buy it? But then I thought about how they always replace the best line in the film with "Yes it's true. This man is some kind of rodent, I'm not sure which" which I can never figure out how in the world that fits into the same verbal space as "It's true. This man has no dick." It's not even close to the same amount of syllables. No matter how many times I see that movie on TV I never understand how they fit that in Bill Murray's mouth.

Anyway, it's also just impossible to see one of the greatest comedies of all time in the $5 bin and not rescue it from the proximity of Harry and the Hendersons.

What have you grabbed from the $5 bin?

Whut. The. You scored big time. That's far better than the occasional browsing I found my favorite genre that included, The Last Starfighter, Flight of the Navigator, Logan's Run. On separate visits.
    Nice score to you.

  2. I found Solaris (the Soderbergh one), In The Mood For Love, Murder!, Misery and Hidden all in the one sale bin. I think the sales person was laughing behind my back because I kept squealing in delight.

It cost me roughly 15 bucks for all of these. Now I go there when I get the chance.

I got me some 70s horror... Let's Scare Jessica to Death.

A recent mental patient and her hippie friends purchase an isolated farm. Throw in a town full of weird locals and a fiery red-haired female vampire.

Now that's a worthwhile five dollar investment!

  4. I don't know if they use it in the Comedy Central version of Ghostbusters, but for years, the edited for TV version had a line that I actually favored over the theatrical.

When exiting the hotel ballroom, Venkman would dryly say, "What a knockabout of pure fun THAT was!" instead of "We came! We saw! We kicked its ass!" Maybe I'm crazy, but I prefered the dryness of the "edited line."

My $5 movies - Ghostbusters, The Gift, Daredevil Director's Cut, and Terminator 2.

  5. Have you wandered into the Big Lots in NoHo lately? All kinds of stuff for $3. I bought PANIC ROOM and DISTURBIA and a 3 pack of PD movies - 10 films total - just to get Curtis Harrington's NIGHT TIDE with Dennis Hopper. I don't have that one, and Harrington is one of those great 60's-70's schlock directors. Met him a couple of times at the movies (he was in the audience and no one knew who he was!).

I have this theory on DVDs... I will not pay full price for some movie I kinda liked, but if it ends up in the bargain bin for $5 or $4 or $3, well, I'm grabbing it. Never know when I might want to watch BREAKING IN again. ($3)

  7. The local Walmart has a lot of $5 movies - but most of them are in Spanish. Still, I found T2 there, Logan's Run, Big, Night of the Living Dead, The Running Man, and Local Hero.

A few movies I didn't know but took a risk on and enjoyed: The Caveman's Valentine (not great, but good enough for $5 for sure), Loverboy, Curdled (wonderful!), Demonlover, and the gem of a movie - The Prizewinner of Defiance Ohio.

More, too - but looking back over my movies I'm not sure which. (I think Cache and Chunking Express were cheapies at Blockbuster.)

  8. I'd probably buy Harry and the Hendersons.

    Or Alf.

If I owned any DVDs at all, that is.

  9. Hitchcock's Rebecca at BestBuy was my happiest bargin bin find! Also, Sense & Sensibility and Sideways.

Reading all the other posted finds reminds me, I've got to hunt through the bargain bin more often.

My fav. line from an edited for TV movie is "Slug in a ditch!"

  10. I don't remember the last one I got from the bin at Walmart. I bought ARMY OF DARKNESS from 5 Below and BEFORE DAWN from the $3 titles at Big Lots. I let my friend pick up the only copy of Casablanca they had.

Next on the purchase list is THE ONE ARMED SWORDSMAN from 5 Below. I love Shaw Brothers titles.
