RIP Heath
Here is a list of actors I'd like to nail.
Jensen Ackles
Jeremy Sisto
Christian Bale
Damian Lewis
Neal McDonough
Ron Livingston
Okay I admit it, the entire cast of Band of Brothers
Eric Bana
Adam Baldwin
Barry Pepper
Robert Maschio (That's right, The Fucking Todd, get over it)
D.B. Woodside
Cole Hauser
Matthew Fox
Greg Grundberg
Milo Ventimiglia
Sendhil Ramamurthy
Okay I admit it, the entire cast of Heroes
And one Heath Ledger.
And now he's gone.
I've loved Heath Ledger since the moment he swept Kat off her feet in 10 Things I Hate About You. That accent, that bad boy with smarts attitude, that sense of mischief - what's not to love?
Then he was a boy with a dream in A Knight's Tale and he did a crazy dance to an excellent David Bowie song. And I don't care what you say about that movie, I love it and him.
And speaking of that film, I'd also like to nail Rufus Sewell.
Heath was so very cool in Lords of Dogtown. It wasn't the greatest film ever, but he was the greatest thing in it.
Same for The Patriot. I spent that entire film trying to quell my disgust with Mel Gibson's frizzy ponytail, but when Heath's character faced his death I got a little weepy.
And of course he was in Brokeback Mountain, a film that could have destroyed his career and instead created it.
Unfortunately it's the film he will always be known for because he never got a chance to trump it.
But anyone who dares to say he can't act needs to shut up and watch that movie. I don't care if you're gay or straight or into monkeys, that film defines love better than any I've seen, and the scene at the close of the film with Heath crying over his two bloody shirts is absolutely heartbreaking.
A lot of actors could have played that role. Not a lot of actors could have made me believe it.
And now he's gone. No more hotness, no more talent, no more of that sexy Australian voice that only had 28 years to speak. And we're all worse off for it. I wanted to see what the man had left up his sleeve. And I wanted to nail him.

I know, it's sad. :(
ReplyDeleteWe'll get to see him this July in The Dark Knight (Batman Movie) as The Joker.
I watched the trailer for "The Dark Knight" for what must be over 100 times, and he would have had a hell of a future after that one.
ReplyDeleteI saw the news when I got to the newsroom of the newspaper I work for and clicked on the "AP News Alert" located in the Entertainment Wire and just froze. I couldn't believe it. It wasn't possible. Then there was a long discussion among the newswriters, sportswriters, and others about Heath Ledger and I got into a discussion with one of the newswriters about how it was easy to replace Katie Holmes with Maggie Gyllenhaal in "The Dark Knight" because Holmes sucked.
But if The Joker must be used in future Batman films, Heath Ledger cannot be replaced. There's no way. That looks like a performance on the level of Ennis Del Mar, the roles I'm sure he would have kept doing. The ones that would always earn him acclaim.
Never imagined how much I would miss the presence of an actor who still had so much to give, but now I imagine and it hurts.
I was accused recently of being someone that liked to stir the pot and/or start fights. I have something to say on this specific post, but I won't.
ReplyDeleteInstead I'll just say RIP Heath. Great actor, seemed like a great guy. Very tragic.
I've realized that as I get older things like this affect me more than they did in years past. As a child I had severe asthma and as a teen I lost someone very close to me and those experiences really made me lose my sense of invincibility at an early age. However, I think you can't truly feel that loss until you've aged a bit and realize just how easily your life or the lives of your friends and family can be taken away.
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard about the woman in Georgia who was killed while hiking with her dog, it hit me quite hard. I didn't think learning about someone I never met or knew of being murdered would affect me, but it really did. Here was a beautiful woman who loved the outdoors, befriended someone while walking her dog, and was subsequently killed by a person she thought she could trust. I go hiking with my dog all the time and meet many interesting people along the way, but I've come to realize that there's an inherent risk in that, but it is a risk I choose to take, troubling as it may be.
I feel similarly about Heath Ledger. Someone who was a year younger than me, someone very successful and talented, someone who's life was cut far too short, possibly by his own hands.
I've come to the realization of just how fragile and unpredictable life can be. It is unsettling, but it also makes me stop and take stock in all life has to offer and continue to live a life full of purpose and enjoyment.
Sorry, luv, but if anyone's going to nail Rufus, it shall be ME!
ReplyDeleteI was going to mention that we still have Dark Knight to look forward to, but I've been beaten to it. Still, I will say one more very cool thing about Heath:
ReplyDeleteHis full name was Heathcliff! How cool is that?
I enjoyed his acting. I feel for his daughter.
ReplyDeleteOn a lighter note I got into Scrubs late last year through the reruns. I am working my way through the season three dvd's.
I think Todd rocks the house and the banana hammock scenes kill me.

At least you still have a few dudes left to nail.
ReplyDeleteNever saw Brokeback Mountain, even when it was free, the subject matter just does not interest me, I did see Knight's Tale, I saw talent. It's all I concern myself with these days. No time for a no-talent in any subject. I guess I'm a little older than most of you, but to me this is just a ping in conparision to the onslaught that will occur when the boomers start dying. Obit's page after page. As far as the nailing list. You should all have your dreams. I'm kinda past that. But, then again, show me some talent and you'll get my attention.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a technique. I've never been a believer in having one set technique on how to act. There are no rules and there is no rulebook. At the end of the day, it all comes down to my instincts. That's the one thing that guides me through every decision professionally. Socially, also. That's my technique. Yeah, you read through the script 100 times. I guess I have little characteristics about myself. Sometimes, most often than not, once we start shooting I won't look at the script at all until we finished shooting. It's kind of like it's been imprinted in my head during rehearsals. You just let it go. --Heath Ledger
ReplyDeleteRIP mate.
Unk
Emily, your embolden sexual forwardness never ceases to FREAK THE SHIT out of me! You are SOO "Tank Girl."
ReplyDeleteI guess I have a "man crush" on Heath -- because I wanted to work with him someday (write something that he would act in)
ET reported he was taking sleeping pills, and I'm wondering if his role as "the Joker" in the upcoming movie, "The Dark Knight" had something to do with that. Did a mental residual effect of playing a dark character torment Heath in a way, and in effect lead to his own demise? I wonder...
Wish Heath Ledger would have live and acted for at least another 20 years. He had a VERY BRIGHT future.

Terribly tragic, Ledger, and even worse is the constant media speculation . . . I wanted to be a journalist at one point in my life, but now the just the thought makes me somewhat ill.
ReplyDeleteFor what it's worth, I went to school with Woodside, still have his email addy somewhere, but I think he's attached -
We used to have a performance group called White-Boy Black-Boy . . . it was loads of fun.
My newest crush is Summer Glau . . .
Summer Glau is definately 'cute', but her face is all scrunched up and she often has a dumbfounded look on her face when she's not talking/smiling just because of how rubbery her face is.
